I`ve seen the film twice now; the second time was better than the first. You have done a wonderful job telling the story of building the CPR, with outstanding photography of both the landscape and the locomotive, and great graphics which make understanding the route easy. And the sound of the loco is marvelous! Hats off to all who contributed, and thanks for a fine experience.

    I watched this film with my family to-day in Cincinnati. You have done a great job to film this and narrate the story. Thanks to all who contributed to the film. I have a suggestion that you add at the end of the film;

Our deepest gratitude for all the american, canadian,Asian,Chinese , japanese and others who had a lot of endurance and sacrifices made to make this marvellous rail track a success. Hats off to all of them.

I saw the movie twice this week. It is so touching. I haven’t really been one to see a movie multiple times, but this one is fast climbing into that category with me! From its excellent graphics and touching, fascinating, and at times haunting story, I can’t stop thinking about it and recommending it.

The music in the film is so beautiful tool…An excellent job. Thank you for the ride!

I just saw the film, and I’m floored by the scenery and the images you captured of 2816. It’s also sad at the same time, because of what’s happened to the once-proud Canadian Pacific over the past year under new management. 2816 is cold now. Will it ever steam again?

  • Gabriel
    August 7, 2013

      October 20, 2013

Hi Judith, thanks for the note–and your grandson’s support! Don’t give up. Expect the DVD/Blu-ray release in 2014 but no date is set yet. Thanks for your patience. Cheers, Alex

    December 20, 2013

Absolutely can’t wait for the DVD release of this. I loved the movie but my son wasn’t able to sit in and watch it as it was played so loud it hurt his ears at the IMAX. He is so excited and I will also be buying a copy for my cousin and my dad!! My uncle worked for Rail lines his entire ‘working’ life so this allowed me to feel closer to him. Thank you for such an incredible film.

    December 26, 2013

I saw it 7 times. I’m waiting for a Blueray copy too! I would’ve watched it more but I had full time school in the way. It reminded me of my childhood days collecting model trains, and inspired me to visit the Rockies.@Vuk Solujic :

Saw this today for the first time in Seattle with my 5-year-old, 2-year-old, and husband. Can’t wait for the DVD release!

I had tears in my eyes and my heart was pounding during the up-close-and-personal scenes with the 2816. Wish we could take a ride on that classic!

Such an amazing story, and so well-told.

We loved seeing this film at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago.
Is there any plan for a return to Chicago or a DVD / Blu Ray release?

  • Bruce Carr
    June 12, 2014

When it is finally released, will it have been reformatted 16:9 to make best use of the wide screen TVs.
It would be disappointing to have the image not fill the screen.
Also, is there a plan for the imax theatres in Australia to show it full size

  • Monica
    July 12, 2014

Our vacation this year will be spent in the Canadian Rockies all thanks to your film. My 7-year-old son has seen the movie 9 times and met the producer when he visited Pittsburgh, PA. He asked Santa for the model replica of the locomotive this past year and got his wish! His infatuation with this film is astonishing. He loved the history behind the making of the railroad and hopes to see a lot of the beautiful places mentioned when we embark on our journey!!

    July 20, 2014

You guys were saying that a DVD would be out in early 2014, but it’s now summer of 2014. I don’t know if the DVD release was scraped, or just pushed back, but please, release the DVD eventually. This film is too good to have it stay a theaters only affair.

You have dedicated fans here in England !!

  • Vuk Solujic
    September 27, 2014

The DVD/BLURAY idea isn’t scrapped, it’s just hard for them to find a distributor to distribute the movie. If they can’t find one, they going to instead release it through iTunes.

  • Eli Wilson
    November 10, 2014

Any updates on the DVD/Bluray release? I never got to see the movie, but I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the trailer for it!

  • Richard Steeves
    November 17, 2014

I saw this film in one of the biggest and best Imax theaters there is and it was amazing. Since then I have been raving about it to my family, but It isn’t shown anywhere near my home. I would love to own this on blue-ray. I have been watching for over a year and a half to hear something. Please tell us when it is going to be released.

    November 26, 2014

Please please release the DVD! My grandfather turned 96 yesterday and he grew up with his dad working on this railroad, and it has so many memories for him. This is not in any theaters we can find near Chicago. It would be so wonderful if I could gift this to him. You have no idea what it would mean for him to have this. I REALLY hope you can sell me the DVD while he still has a chance to enjoy it and re-live his childhood.

    November 28, 2014

My family and I live near Fort Steele, BC in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. We took our kids to see this IMAX movie 2 years ago in Victoria. My son (now 5) loved the film and I keep checking to see if you’ve released it on DVD yet. It’d be a great Christmas present. I can see from all the previous comments that I am not the only one impatiently waiting…

  • Mark Witmer
    December 2, 2014

I saw this film in Branson Mo fall 2013 and have been waiting to purchase the DVD as soon as it is released. I was hoping it would be available for a Christmas gift this year but it looks like that won’t happen.
I would think any distributor would jump at the chance to offer this wonderful production.

An incredible piece of filming, editing, producing. Amazing sound!
The story line is most interesting. With current technology for surveying its hard to imagine how the rails were ever forced through the Rockies.

Please oh please release it on DVD! I’m sure there is a strong market! So many rail enthusiasts and model railroaders.

  • Hugh Turnbaugh
    December 6, 2014

Just saw this fun in Seattle with my son. He was so upset when it ended. Can’t wait for the DVD release. We intend on buying a few for ourselves and Christmas gifts if released in time.

@TSLC : I literally cried throughout this movie it was so ***LONG LIST OF EXPLETIVES* good

From the visuals to the sounds… I felt like I was there.

Like the others here, and I’m sure many not here, I would do almost anything for this on DVD. Just tell me what to do… haha.

But seriously, how can it be hard to find a distributor? They must have their thumbs up their…. noses 😉

    “Patiently” waiting.

Hello! Like so many others, I am patently waiting for a Blu-ray release of this movie. If it’s released on iTunes, then it won’t be rendered in 1080P high-def, right?

Hoping for a Blu-ray release this year!

    March 24, 2015

@Martin : Hi Martin– I too am waiting for the DVD to be issued for The Rockey Mountain Express here in Canada. It is a film I could watch many times over– and also because I like the steam trains so much ! I am lucky to be able to remember them from when I was very young ! I saw this movie at La Geode in Paris with my 6 years old son.
    we both were delited.
This is a fabulous movie about an amazing story we didn’t know at all.
I can’t express myself the best in english but just go and see it.
    You will be realy surprised.
Now we are waiting for the blu-ray or DVD release, hoping it to have the same french sound track we heard.

seriously guys, its may of 2015, how hard can it be to get a DVD deal with somebody?? seriously, how is it that legends of flight was also made by the stephen low company and it was released A YEAR LATER, while it has taken almost 5 years for a rocky mountain express dvd?!?

    May 27, 2015

    Good morning,

Iknow you are vey busy producing new IMAX films but me like others on this tread would like to know when can we expect a DVD / Blue-Ray version of the film.
Yes we can still see it at the Exporail Museum in delson, Quebec, but I think it is about time to have it on DVD since it has been over 4 years since it was release.
In my view, this is the best film ever on steam locomotive with all the story around the building on the CP line in the rockies.
    Just waiting…

    July 2, 2015

My husband and I saw the Rocky Mountain Express in the year 2013 at the Imax in Victoria, B.C. Canada. We loved every minute of it and would love to get the DVD – it would be a treasure. We are both involved with trains – volunteers and ticket agent with the Prairie Dog Central Railway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. My Grandfather, Uncle and my own Dad were employees with the CNR for all their lives – so trains are in my blood (so to speak). We have been waiting for the release of the Rocky Mountain Express DVD with the hopes that it will be out this year.

    December 20, 2015

I, like everyone else, would really like a DVD of the IMAX movie: Rocky Mountain Express. I was hoping by now it would be available. I saw it at the Museum of Science in Boston a couple of years ago. I know my mother-in-law, who is 90 would love to see it. Her father was conductor on the New York, New Haven, Haftford RR, old colony line down to Cape Cod.

  • Jazmine
    December 22, 2015

I saw this movie a few years ago at IMAX and I surprised that it still has not been released to DVD. I’m disappointed.

  • Joseph Sarmento
    April 10, 2016

Was this ever a 3D release?

    • TSLC
      April 10, 2016

Rocky Mountain Express is filmed in 15perf 70mm — the largest film format in the world. No it is not available in 3D. With the high quality image and close-up gyro-stabilized helicopter footage, it’s better than 3D.

  • Jacques Brouillette
    April 15, 2016

There is a date for the Blu Ray and 4K Ultra HD release!!!

If you go on the website of the Shout Factory, you will see:
The “Rocky Mountain Express” on Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray HD disc is scheduled to be released on the 2016-07-12.
They have a pre order option.

I saw the documentary twice. loved the history, the scenery, the film narrative, everything. But most of all how one egomaniac man can send a whole country to the brink of bankrupsy while another could make a nation flourish, prosper and open up one of the most beautiful frontiers in the world.

  • Anthony S.
    July 21, 2016

@TSLC : Apparently, there is a Blu-ray 3-D release planned for release in Germany on September 22, 2016. On the cover, it says it was “made for Imax 3D theaters”. Did anyone see it theatrically in 3-D? Is this just another poor European post-conversion?

    • TSLC
      August 28, 2016

Hi Anthony, There is a European Blu-ray release in the works for September. The release is not in 3D.

  • Michael and Tanner Morgan
    August 28, 2016

Mr. Low, I drove my son to Kansas Ciry in 2012 to see Rocky Mountain Express, knowing it would be stunning on the big screen. Better than the high expectations. We have flown twice to Calgary just to see CP2816 in her modern excursion element. Golden to Banff we chased her……we know Doyle and followed the amazing 2816 restoration.to steam. You and your crew did a singular most exceptional piece of work with Rocky Mountain Express. Stunning from beginning to end, and thank you for the DVD release, we already have our HD copy and watch the presentation often. Even your list of steam crew credits included everyone that contributed to 2816’s rebirth. With some luck, perhaps someday soon CP2816 will live again on the CP mainline. THANK YOU for your work and most relevant contribution to history!
